Few cities can claim to represent the South as Columbia does. Located at the junction of three major interstate highways, it is a thriving center of commerce and culture. Unlike some of the biggest cities in the United States though, it retains a strong sense of historical identity while embracing modernity. The second city in the U.S. to have urban planning, it was settled nearly 300 years ago and was chosen as South Carolina's capital in 1786.
