Founded in 1706 by a group of Spanish colonists, Albuquerque retains much of its early cultural heritage. Parts of an original adobe chapel as well as other original historic buildings survive to this day. The past is very much alive in Albuquerque and it is a distinctive part of the United States. Beyond sampling the famously spicy food and fine tequilas, there are many things to see and do in Albuquerque. Although hot air ballooning is a popular activity at any time in Albuquerque, the internationally famous Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta is not to be missed. Once a year hundreds of hot air balloons climb the skies, their brilliant colors set against the usually cloudless Albuquerque sky. If you are not here during the festival, you can still enjoy ballooning. One recommended operator is Castle Dawn Ballooning, located at 323 Romero St NW, Suite 13.
Albuquerque also is an ideal place for many other outdoor activities. A strong, well-maintained network of trails and spectacular scenery make for excellent hiking and mountain biking. For the golfer, excellent courses provide challenge and variety.
Of course, no visit to Albuquerque would be complete without taking advantage of its shopping and dining options. While the latest fashions can certainly be found at Albuquerque's stores, it is best to take advantage of some of its specialties, including handmade Native American crafts and Southwestern furniture. For a special dining experience, try some New Mexican cuisine at any of the dozens of restaurants which specialize in it. A word of caution--it may be just a bit spicier than what you're used to back home! |
