If you're a history buff, a trip to the Etowah Indiana Community will be well worth the drive. Just 45-minute from downtown in Cartersville, the site features ceremonial mounds that date back more than 1,000 years. The mounds were used as burial places for priests platforms and temples. The largest of the grassy mounds rises 63-feet above the ground.
The history lesson continues with a trip down U.S. Highway 27 to Fort Oglethorpe . The Fort features more than 600 monuments and markers that depict battle lines and commemorate casualties at this Civil War historical site in the northwest corner of Georgia , just 90 miles from downtown Atlanta . Inside of the visitor center there are over 300 weapons on display that date back to the Revolutionary War and continue through World War II.
Your outdoor adventure can continue with a trip to Amicalola Falls State Park . Just an hour from the city this state park attracts more than 2-million visitors annually. Amicalola, a Cherokee Indian word meaning tumbling waters, is an appropriate name as this park features a 729-foot waterfall that is the tallest east of the Mississippi River . The park also features hiking trails and plenty of wildlife including deer and black bears.
Callaway Gardens is 70 miles from the city, but will seem a world apart as more than 14,000 acres of natural beauty await you. Callaway is an award-winning, 14,000-acre garden, resort and preserve nestled in the southernmost foothills of the Appalachian Mountains , in Pine Mountain , Georgia . The park features more than 700 varieties of azalea - many displayed in the 40-acre Azalea Bowl.
You'll find activities for the entire family at Callaway Gardens . Start with the 10-mile, paved Discovery Bike Trail, which provides a healthy and scenic way to view the gardens. There is also several golf courses, including the world-renown Mountain View Golf Course, which was the former home of the PGA Tour's Buick Challenge. Lakes for fishing, a gun club for skeet shooting and a tennis resort that has been ranked amongst the top 50 tennis resorts in the United States by Tennis Magazine are just a few of the other attractions.
Sports and music fans often make the journey to the relatively short trip to downtown Macon to visit the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame . The 43,00 square foot Music Hall of Fame features an ever changing line up of exhibits of more than 450 artists, including Macon legends Little Richard, James Brown and Ottis Redding. The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame features displays and memorabilia of some of the greatest athletes from the state of Georgia .
If you have some time on your hands and a rental car with unlimited mileage, a longer road trip will allow you to visit several other hot tourists attractions that are between 100 and 150 miles from the city. Some of the locations will even take you just outside of the state of Georgia , allowing you to explore the natural wonders of the southeast.
If you have kids, a visit to Augusta , Georgia 's Fort Discovery is a hands-on adventure that your children will soon not forget. Fort Discovery features over 128,000 square feet and two floors that house more than 270 interactive exhibits. All of the exhibits are hands-on or "minds-on" activities that challenge the visitor to learn more. Other Fort Discovery features include a gallery especially for young scientists ages seven and under, a computer lab and a Science Store that is loaded with take home projects.
Birmingham, Alabama is also a sought after destination for kids and families. Visionland is the premeire family attraction. The Six Flags-style theme park features roller coasters, water rides and live entertainment. For one price, you can enjoy all of the park amenities for the entire day. While in Birmingham , stop by the McWane Center to view science and technology displays. Other must-see sites include the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the Birmingham Museum of Art.
If you decide to head west, Tennessee has several attractive options. Just 115 miles from the city in Chattanooga , you'll find the Tennessee Aquarium and IMAX Theater. The 12-story facility is the largest freshwater aquarium in the world, holding more than 9,000 fish, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. While visiting, view movies in a larger than life and realistic quality inside the IMAX Theater.
